My Kontakt Piano Library
DREAM PIANO

Dream Piano by Riccardo Monaco

Dream Piano is a sampled piano library for Kontakt developed for my bachelor’s thesis at

Saint Louis College of Music (Rome), recorded using a Schimmel grand piano.

This page outlines how the project was created.

The goal of the project was to create a realistic, playable, and musically responsive virtual piano instrument suitable for professional use.

The instrument was captured using a multi-microphone setup, featuring a Neumann U87 positioned over the lower register strings and a Shure SM57 placed near the upper register soundboard area to achieve a balanced and detailed result.

The recording process included multiple velocity layers and dedicated pedal sampling, with separate sample sets recorded for sustain and una corda articulations. When the pedals are engaged, Kontakt automatically switches to the corresponding sample groups, providing a more authentic and realistic piano response.

It was a time-consuming process that required many hours of work and precision.

The library was then programmed in Kontakt using KSP scripting, allowing for full control over the instrument’s behavior, user interface, and expressive playback.

Below are two short performances demonstrating Dream Piano in different contexts: Alicia showcases the instrument with some of its built-in effects enabled, while Megalovania presents the piano in its dry, unprocessed state.

Dream Piano is available as a free download below (you need Kontakt Full version to open it):
